Worst Year for Measles in 20 Years

So far this year, 288 cases of measles have been reported to the CDC, including some cases right here in Tennessee. This is the largest number of measles cases in the United States for the first five months of any year since 1994.

The increase in measles cases is being driven by unvaccinated people, primarily U.S. residents, who traveled and got measles in other countries, brought the virus back to the United States, and spread it to others in communities where many people are not vaccinated.

Measles is HIGHLY contagious, serious disease. For Vanderbilt employees, please check your Health & Wellness Portal to confirm that you are up to date with your measles vaccinations. If you are not up to date with this vaccination, you can walk into Occupational Health anytime Monday-Friday, 7:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. to take care of this.
