What does healthy eating look like? Eating healthy means you choose a variety of foods from the basic food groups: protein foods; dairy; fruits; vegetables; and grains. Eating healthy means that you have to plan and make an effort to make sure you are eating a variety of foods so you can get the nutrients you need.
One way to make sure you are eating healthy is to know what you are eating. There are many ways to do that. Some people keep a food journal and make sure they are getting the correct number of servings in each food group each day. In addition to keeping a food journal, healthy cooking at home is another way to control calories, portions, and make sure you are getting the nutrients you need.
What does cooking healthy look like? Here are some basics:
- Reduce or omit fats in your regular recipes. You can do this and not lose the taste.
- Use leaner cuts of meat.
- Cut the amount of sugar used in recipes by 1/3 to 1/2.
- Use more vegetables and avoid drenching your food in gravies or cheese. Think fresh or frozen instead of dried, processed, or canned.
- Use spices.
- Watch portion sizes.
